If a boat has been in a body of water other than Cable Lake in the last five days it needs to be thoroughly cleaned before entering the water. Pat and Sue Quinn created and installed a new boat cleaning station at the boat landing. Cable Lake Association members have stepped up to keep the bleach filled and the station maintained. Lakes Superior, Michigan, Namekagon, and Hayward + many other surrounding lakes have serious AIS issues. Just one boat entering the water carrying AIS could forever alter the ecosystem of Cable and Wiley Lakes. The Cable Lake Association Board is working toward an established action plan to monitor the presence of AIS, and if needed, enact a response to work toward mitigation. Not all AIS respond to mitigation so the best action plan is prevention.

Through the use of data analytics The Cable Lake Board determined an increase of landing monitors hours was necessary at peak times. In order to accomplish this, the board voted to increase the wage to make it competitive with other monitoring programs. Landing monitors are now scheduled for a total of 440 hours over the summer months. Fritz Severson is former Cable Lake Board member and landing monitor. According to Fritz, people are using the new cleaning station. Some boaters are proactively cleaning when they exit just to do their part to keep the next lake safe. Water sampling continues, additionally the board has requested a DNR meandering study to monitor the presence of AIS.

The Cable Lake Board is targeting out-of-town boaters with public awareness messaging. Next time you are in Cable, stop in to the Chamber office and thank Heather & Cricket and for posting“Clean Boats Save Lakes” on the electronic kiosk. This public awareness messaging will run continuously starting with fishing opening and throughout the season.
