Join us as we share updates on our ongoing efforts to preserve water quality and other initiatives. We welcome and encourage input and involvement from the community. We are also pleased to include Michael Raymond, NPS Park Ranger. Michael will provide a brief history of the St Croix National Scenic Riverway followed by a presentation on the mussels inhabiting the St Croix-Namekagon. Can you guess what watershed in North America has every species of freshwater mussel?

How Clean are Cable & Wiley Lakes?

2025 Water Quality Report

The Cable Lake Association conducts water quality testing twice a year via UW-Stevens Point, and has collected and analyzed 4 water samples from 2022-2024.

Based on the data, Cable Lake appears to be in good ecological health, with improving trends in key indicators like Total Phosphorus and Turbidity, suggesting reduced nutrient loading and clearer water. 

Hardness, pH and conductivity remain stable, while nitrogen levels are moderate and mostly declining. The absence of Chloride and low Soluble Reactive Phosphorus further support low pollution inputs.

Overall, the lake is nutrient-balanced, chemically stable, and clear, showing signs of a healthy, well-functioning freshwater system. Note: we are also starting to test Wiley Lake as well, so in the coming years we'll have similar data to share.

Let’s continue on this positive trend by following these simple steps:
* Avoid fertilizer in lawn and gardens
* Maintain natural as possible shorelines
* Inspect and regularly pump septic tanks (minimun every 5 years)
* Help remove Aquatic Invasive Species

Aquatic Invasive Species

Purple Loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria

Purple Loosestrife is an invasive species commonly found throughout the shorelines and roadsides in the Cable area. This plant starts to bloom with its striking purple flowers by early June. A notable sighting can be observed at the channel connecting Cable and Wiley Lake, although it proliferates in various locations along the shorelines.

The reproductive capacity of Purple Loosestrife is significant, with each plant capable of producing around 2,000 seeds. To prevent its spread, it is advisable to remove these plants early in their life cycle, ideally before they go to seed. When attempting removal, it is important to wear rubber gloves and ensure that roots are included in the extraction. Upon removal, disposing of the plants in plastic bags is the most effective method. It’s important to avoid burning the plants, as this can lead to the dispersal of seeds and exacerbate the problem

Pine Haven Retreat

This beloved vintage sign at the corner of Wald Road and HWY 63 signals that we are very close to Cable Lake. Does anyone have further information about “Pine Haven Retreat”? Although the lettering is faded after the red stars, “150 & 300 Lots” “Access Road” is visible. It seems it was an early lake development of some sort. See the postcard image below, provided by the Cable History Museum.
