Call for New Board Members

Take on a Leadership Position. Volunteer your time to work with a small dedicated organization of volunteers. The Cable Lake Association board is diverse group whose primary mission is to keep the lake clean now and for future generations. Three new positions will be available starting July 6. Go to the handy Board Tab on to review Board activity, advisors, meeting minutes, water quality reports + more. If interested please reach out to a Board Member or contact the Cable Lake Association here at least two weeks before the annual meeting.

Water Quality Report and Monitoring

Your Cable Lake Association members are dedicated to water quality testing. The 2024 plan is as follows:

• Brian Szymanski will continue to collect water samples in Spring and Fall and submit to UW-Stevens Point for analysis

• Rick Minkley will continue with Secchi testing for water clarity.

New Aquatic Invasive Species Discovered

Last year some DNR partners and I found arrow arum (Peltandra virginica) in a northern bay of Cable Lake. Arrow arum stands 2-4 feet high with egg-shaped seed pods/capsules and long, broad, arrow-shaped leaves (see attached photos). I estimate there were approximately two dozen patches on Cable Lake, each patch measuring about 4-5 feet in diameter. I urge folks to not be alarmed, as this plant may simply continue to exist as it is; however, I do recommend keeping an eye on it. If anyone finds patches of this plant elsewhere on the lake, I (and my counterparts at the DNR) would like to know about it.

Town of Cable Wake Boat Ordinance

One of the significant actions that the Cable Lake Association members tackled in 2023, was addressing the potential damage to water clarity and purity due to Surf Boat Wake activity. Due to the persistent efforts of Board and community members, Surf Boats are no longer permitted to create wakes on Cable and Wiley Lakes due to inadequate shoreline clearance and water depth. Operating a surf wake boat on smaller bodies of water threatens water clarity and purity. Therefore by order of the Town of Cable: No boat shall cast a wake in excess of 2-feet on Cable & Wiley Lakes. Read the research on Surf boats here.
